Scholarship Requirements

There are four requirements to continue receiving the Johnetta Haley Scholarship (JHS).

  1. Find, schedule, participate in, report, and receive final approval for a minimum of 12 hours of qualified community service experiences each semester (excluding winter and summer sessions).
  2. Maintain full-time student status by finishing each semester (excluding winter and summer sessions) enrolled in at least 12 credit hours of classes (minimum of four 3-hour classes or equivalent).
  3. Finish each semester with a cumulative GPA of 2.9 or higher.
  4. Register with the SOAR Office. The SOAR Office tracks completion of the community service requirement and assists students in completing community service.
    • Students new to SIUE (first-year and transfer students): register by completing the JHS Student Info Form.
    • Continuing/Returning students: Watch for instructions from the SOAR Office for completing the JHS Student Info Form or verifying information on file. Instructions are sent via email on an as-needed basis.
    • Recipients whose cell phone number changes: Immediately contact the SOAR Office to update this information.

Spring 2025 Schedule
DECEMBER 2024

14: Community Service for Spring 2025 Begins (Community service completed December 3 - 13 will not be applied to Johnetta Haley Scholarship requirements.) 

JANUARY 2025

13: Spring 2025 Classes Begin

22: First Spring 2025 JHS Newsletter Sent to JHS Recipients' SIUE Email Accounts

31: Report all hours performed 12/14/24 - 1/31/25; Have at least 4 hours completed and reported

FEBRUARY 2025

10: Review Progress Update #1 (email sent to students' SIUE email accounts). Respond with any questions/discrepancies.

  • This email is delayed and will be sent out later this week. We are still reviewing January submissions. Please check your submissions - read the reviewers' comments and respond to any questions.

28: Report all hours performed 2/1/25 - 2/28/25; Have at least 8 hours (total) completed and reported

MARCH 2025

5: Review Progress Update #2 (email sent to students' SIUE email accounts). Respond with any questions/discrepancies.

10 - 14: Spring Break

31: Report all hours performed 3/1/25 - 3/31/25; Have 12 hours (total) completed and reported

APRIL 2025

7: Review Progress Update #3 (email sent to students' SIUE email accounts). Respond with any questions/discrepancies.

21: Community Service Reports Due by 11:59 p.m.: Click here to check the status of your submissions to the Spring 2025 JHS Community Service Report Form. This is also the deadline to: A) respond to reviewers' questions (if any), B) provide additional information (if requested), and C) to resubmit reports (with prior permission only).

22 - May 9: Black-Out Dates: Community service performed/reported April 22 - May 9 will not be applied to Johnetta Haley Scholarship requirements. Use this time to concentrate on preparing for final exams and completing final projects.

29: Review Final Progress Update (email sent to students' SIUE email accounts). Respond with any questions/discrepancies.

MAY 2025

5 - 9: Final Exams

7: Review Final Status Notification (email sent to students' SIUE email accounts). Respond with any questions/discrepancies.

10: Community Service for Fall 2025 Begins (Community service completed April 22 - May 9 will not be applied to Johnetta Haley Scholarship requirements.) 

 

Student Responsibilities

Johnetta Haley Scholarship Student Guide
The Johnetta Haley Scholarship Student Guide (JHS Student Guide) contains all requirements, policies, procedures, and specifications governing community service for the Johnetta Haley Scholarship.

  • JH Scholarship recipients are responsible for promptly reading and ensuring thorough understanding of the guide and subsequent changes/updates to the guide. All questions are welcome and should be directed to the SOAR Office.
  • Exceptions will not be made on the basis of a recipient’s lack of awareness or misunderstanding of any requirement, policy, procedure, or specification.
  • All requirements, policies, procedures, and specifications are subject to change at any time. The most recent version of the guide will be posted here on the JHS Website. The SOAR Office will notify recipients of any changes/updates to the guide.

Email Responsibilities
Email is used as the primary method of communication regarding the JH Scholarship. It is recommended that all students check their SIUE email daily.

Each JHS recipient is responsible for:
  1. Promptly addressing any technical issues related to logging in and using SIUE email by contacting SIUE ITS (call 618-650-5500, email [email protected]). ITS provides free assistance to SIUE students, 24/7, with email, computer, and other technology issues. 
  2. Notifying the SOAR Office immediately (email [email protected]) if the recipient does not receive the first issue of the JHS Newsletter by end of the first week of the semester, stops receiving the newsletter during the semester, or is experiencing other issues with receiving the newsletter.
    • WARNING: Clicking the “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any email sent from SIUE may cause the recipient to also be unsubscribed from the JHS Newsletter. It is recommended that students do not unsubscribe from any emails sent from SIUE and do not block any SIUE staff/department email addresses.
    • Each issue of the JHS Newsletter can also be viewed here on the JHS Website. Therefore, no exceptions will be made to any requirement, policy, procedure, or specification on the basis of a recipient not receiving the JHS Newsletter email(s).
  3. Promptly and thoroughly reading all JHS-related email to avoid missing information such as:
    • Info about pre-qualified community service experiences.
    • Tips, strategies, and frequently asked questions about community service.
    • Community service progress updates, goal/deadline reminders, and confirmation of completion.
    • Notices of final approval decisions for community service reports.
    • Notification of any notices sent from SOAR to Financial Aid regarding incomplete community service.
    • Scholarship probation and/or suspension notification(s), if any.
    • Instructions for registering with SOAR and/or verifying information on file.
    • Notification of changes/updates to the JHS Student Guide.
    • JHS news and announcements.
  4. Promptly responding to any JHS-related email that:
    • Requests a response.
    • Appears to contain inaccurate information.
    • The recipient does not fully understand or finds confusing. All questions are welcome and should be directed to the sender of the email.
  5. Communicating clearly and in a professional manner. Read and use the JHS Email Guidelines to develop professional and effective email skills.

 

How to Complete Community Service

All recipients of the Johnetta Haley Scholarship are expected to read the JHS Student Guide each semester. The guide includes general information about the Johnetta Haley Scholarship, community service information, and frequently asked questions. The last page includes all important contact information and website addresses.
