Under the direction of specialized professional staff, SIUE Campus Recreation Graduate Assistants are responsible for assisting within their area of specialization in addition to supporting the collective team effort of the Campus Recreation Department. Graduate assistants typically oversee some level of student personnel and are charged with harnessing their work potential while contributing to the development of all students.

Salary Information:
Each graduate assistant position offers a full-in/out-of-state tuition waiver plus a stipend of $1167.20 per month for the first year and a longevity bonus of $1230.40 per month in the second year. Professional development resources are also available. The employee is responsible for student fees. Per Internal Revenue Service regulations (IRC 127), federal taxes will be withheld on tuition waiver amounts exceeding $5,250 in the calendar year (January-December).

Aquatics & Facility Operations Graduate Assistant (Anticipated Opening - Fall of 2025)
The Aquatics and Facility Operations Graduate Assistant will split time between two responsible areas (aquatics and Recreation Operations). In Aquatics, this position will include student-lifeguard personnel management and other aquatics supervision duties of the SIUE Vadalabene Center Indoor Pool (25 yards, 6 lanes, 1-meter springboard). The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to developing and conducting training in-services for 10-15 lifeguards; recruiting, training, scheduling, and evaluating lifeguards, assisting with student payroll, budget planning, policy development, and the equipment inventory/purchasing process as necessary.
The recreation operations aspect of this position will rotate into the supervision of activities and events housed within the exclusive recreational space of the Student Fitness Center and the shared recreation space in the Vadalabene Center and other auxiliary facilities (200,000 total sq. ft.). These facilities include a total of six basketball courts, a 25-yard pool, two climbing areas, two group fitness rooms, a cycling room, a multi-sport court, two informal fitness/strength areas, a dedicated weight room, indoor jogging track, racquetball courts, multipurpose areas, and two member service stations, all of which typically operate seven days a week. This position may also have opportunities to specialize and have advanced roles in areas such as indoor climbing gym leadership, bike share program oversight and/or risk management, and emergency action plan training. A combined workload of an average of 20 hours per week is expected with some early morning, evening, and weekend work required.

Facilities & Operations Graduate Assistant (Anticipated Opening - Fall of 2026)
The Campus Recreation Facilities and Operations Graduate Assistant position will require an emphasis on Campus Recreation operations including some direct facility supervision on a rotating schedule. Additional specialization options are also available in the areas of facilities/operations, fitness, member services, climbing, or student-employee development. This position has been intentionally designed to have an emphasis on teamwork and flexibility as our department seeks to remain well poised to serve our participants through evolving conditions.
This position will also serve on a team that oversees and supports the activities housed within the dedicated recreational space of the Student Fitness Center and the shared recreation space in the Vadalabene Center and other auxiliary facilities (200,000 total sq. ft.). Informal Fitness & Student Development (Anticipated Opening - Fall of 2026)
the Graduate Assistant (Fitness Operations and Student Development) is responsible for providing assistance in the coordination, guidance, supervision, and direction of informal fitness operations and personnel. This includes developing schedules, hiring, training, supervising, evaluating up to 25 fitness attendants and maintaining and troubleshooting equipment in the main facility and six satellite facilities. Equipment includes cardio, selectorized strength, plate loaded, free weights and racks/platforms. The Graduate Assistant will assist with hiring, training and development opportunities for all Campus Recreation Student Employees; including applicant tracking, new employee orientations, annual trainings, employee appreciation events and incentive and deficiency processes. Additional responsibilities include special event support and some administrative duties.

Member Services & Operations Graduate Assistant (Anticipated Opening - Fall of 2026)
The Member Services Graduate Assistant will provide leadership and work with all facets of Member Services and Operations with a significant emphasis on Reception Desk and Equipment Issue student-staff personnel management, scheduling, training, and evaluation. Other areas of responsibility include but are not limited to reconciling daily deposits, monthly reports to other SIUE departments, student-staff development, and evolving needs of the Campus Recreation unit.

Recreation Programs & Special Events Graduate Assistant (Anticipated Opening - Fall of 2025)
The Recreational Programming and Special Events Graduate Assistant is responsible for assisting in the planning, development and implementation of all special events and marketing for Campus Recreation programming. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: Coordinating and managing special events and programs that fit the specific wellness needs of assigned populations; recruiting, training, scheduling, and evaluating student employees, along with staff development; promoting and marketing the Intramural/Club Sports/Campus Recreation and campus-wide special events; collaborating and serving as the recreation outreach liaison to SIUE Campus partners and student organizations, coordinate, collaborate, and cosponsor in recreational activities/experiences/events across a variety of the SIUE campus; and assisting with policy development, and equipment inventory and purchasing process. A combined workload of 20 hours per week is expected, with the expectation that many programs and needs will occur during evening and weekend hours.
