Complaint Against an SIUE Police Department Employee
Every year officers from the SIUE Police Department have thousands of contacts with citizens, issue hundreds of traffic citations, and make arrests. Despite the large number of citizen contacts, a relatively small number of complaints are generated against our employees. Sometimes the situation is simply informational, where a citizen does not understand the laws involved, police powers or procedures.
If a complaint involves an employee's demeanor or actions, such as misconduct or use of force, an investigation will be conducted. Police department employees are held to the highest standards of ethical conduct. We take every complaint seriously. When an investigation is completed and corrective action is warranted, proper action is taken.
The police department looks to its employees to embrace the responsibility to promote public safety with service, integrity and pride to improve the quality of life of our citizens.
In the event that you have questions or concerns regarding any interaction with any employee of the police department, you should first make contact with the employee's immediate supervisor and discuss your concerns. To determine the employee’s immediate supervisor, please call 618-650-3324 or come to the SIUE Police Department.
If, after speaking with the employee's immediate supervisor, you are not satisfied with the response, you have the right to file a formal complaint against the employee. Please complete and have notarized the attached Complaint Against Departmental Member and Affidavit and submit it to the SIUE Chief of Police.
When review shows solely a difference of opinion regarding guilt or innocence of the complaint in the case of a citation or criminal charge, the complainant will be advised that the court system is the proper venue for a decision.
The police department is dedicated to preserving the integrity of the agency and takes any allegation of improper actions seriously. 50 ILCS 725/3.8 (b) requires that, "Anyone filing a complaint against a sworn peace officer must have the complaint supported by a sworn affidavit."
It is a violation of 720 ILCS 5/26-1(a)(4) to willfully make a false police report. In the event the report is proven to be false, the information may be provided to the State's Attorney for possible prosecution.
