Do I need to fill out and submit a protocol if the project falls into an exempt category of review?

Yes, if your project falls into one of these exempt categories:

  1. Using invertebrates only,
  2. Using whole dead animals that were never alive when brought to campus,
  3. Using internal animal tissue, internal organs, eggs, embryos, fetuses, etc. that were obtained commercially or as a byproduct of another approved research project, or
  4. Non-intrusive field research (observation only, no contact with animals or manipulation of the animal’s environment).

Included within the protocol should be a detailed explanation of what the project will entail, similar to a typical animal protocol (e.g., where the study is taking place, how the animals are being used, etc.).

If there are questions about this type of review, and to facilitate a more efficient review process, please reach out to [email protected] before submission.
