In Memoriam: Alice Prince, PhD, Emerita Faculty in Public Health
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville community mourns the passing of Alice Prince, PhD, emerita professor of Health Education (now Public Health) in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior. Born October 6, 1942, in Terre Haute, Ind., Prince dedicated more than 12 years of service to SIUE, inspiring students to pursue meaningful careers in health education, challenge injustice, and work toward a healthier, more equitable society. She passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, in Maryville, Ill.
A trailblazer in HIV/AIDS education, Prince brought compassion, honesty, and advocacy to her teaching. She was deeply committed to democracy, fairness, and empowering students to recognize and address inequalities in public health. As a non-traditional student and parent, she earned her PhD and later co-founded the SIUE Alice Prince Award, a scholarship supporting non-traditional students in public health.
Prince retired in 2006 but remained dedicated to student success. Her impact continues through the many students she mentored and the work they carry forward in public health.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alice Prince Award via the SIUE Foundation at SIUE Applied Health Development Fund (Select “3210-Applied Health Development” and specify the Alice Prince Award in the comments.)
