Darryl Coan
Office: Dunham Hall Rm 2104 (618) 650-2012 [email protected]Darryl Coan is Professor of Music. He is Director of the SIUE World Music Ensemble and recently served as Chair of the SIUE Department of Music.
He completed his undergraduate education at Illinois State University (1985) and taught public school k-12 instrumental, choral, and general music. He completed his Master's and Doctoral (1992) degrees at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with emphases in General Music and Technology-Based Music Education, respectively. His secondary emphasis was instructional and curricular design.
He is currently co-founder and Associate Editor for TOPICS for Music Education Praxis (ISSN 2468-4681), a new peer-reviewed journal of The MayDay Group for Music Education. TOPICS issued its first Call for Papers in late 2014 and began live publication in October 2015. TOPICS is an Open Access Journal. He was one of the co-founders of Action, Criticism and Research for Music Education (ACT-ISSN 1545-4517) and served as its first Publishing Editor from 2000-2006. ACT was the first peer-reviewed scholarly e-journal of the Mayday Group for Music Education and is highly regarded for its scholarly standards.
Dr. Coan was Coordinator of the SIUE theory curriculum for 14 years, Director of Graduate Studies in Music for 12 years, and serves as faculty liaison for the Music Computer Lab. He is an active clinician and conductor and conducts Heritage Community Band, a municipal band with roots reaching back to 1863.
