Associate Dean Chris Gordon, PhD, has received the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Regional Outstanding Educator Award. He was recognized at the ASC International Conference in April for his contributions to construction education, excellence in teaching, national and international service to the ASC, and dedication to the construction profession.

“I’m honored to receive the ASC Regional Outstanding Educator Award,” Gordon shared. “My engagement with ASC over the years has helped me to grow professionally, and in turn, has helped to support the development of our students, faculty and construction education community.”

Students from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are celebrating standout showings at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 5 Student Conference in Houston in April.

The IEEE is one of the world’s largest professional societies, with Region 5 of the IEEE encompassing most of the central part of the country. The SIUE student branch is co-advised by Amardeep Kaur, PhD, and George Engel, PhD, who accompanied the group to Houston.

“While SIUE has participated in the IEEE student contests many times over the past 30 years and has even placed in the top three in some of the other student contests, this is the first time that we have placed in one of the top three spots in the Circuit Design Competition,” shared Engel.

SIUE has received $1.5 million in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of a novel model for graduate education that removes financial barriers and increases diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

The project, “At the Confluence: Supporting Critical Transitions for Graduate Students in Sustainable Watersheds Research,” is led by principal investigator (PI) Adriana E. Martinez, PhD, associate professor in the Departments of Environmental Sciences and Geography and Geographic Information Sciences (GIS).

According to Martinez, the project’s leadership team reflects a variety of subdisciplines within watershed sciences including faculty in civil engineering, climatology, geomorphology and hydrology, watershed biotic populations and communities, and geology. Rohan Benjankar, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, is among the leadership team.

TheOther40 business plan competition gives SIUE students real-world experience to develop business plans, pitch business ideas, and learn what it takes to launch a new business. The SIUE School of Business and Entrepreneurs’ Club hosted its 12th competition in 2022, which concluded in April. Eight finalists competed for $10,000 in prize money.

School of Engineering senior Adam Morris achieved first place and $5,000 for Power Frisbees, an automatic frisbee launcher which can be used for ultimate frisbee practice for both individuals and teams. Currently there are no training tools that can replace a partner when it comes to practicing catching frisbees.

“The winning pitch from Power Frisbees combined an innovative idea with true market potential,” noted School of Business Dean Tim Schoenecker. “We expect the prize money will help that team move its prototype closer to market. I’ll be excited to see where Power Frisbees goes in the future.”

John Matta, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, has earned the SIUE Graduate School’s 2022-23 Vaughnie Lindsay New Investigator Award in support of his innovative research on equity and inclusion in computer science. Matta's scholarly interests focus on complex networks, machine learning, graph, theory and computing education. He will receive a combined $12,500 from the Graduate School and School of Engineering to be used in a one-year period. 

The award will fund his research project, entitled “Developing an Open-Source Mobile App to Improve Participation of Underserved Populations in Respondent-Driven Sampling Surveys” which aims to develop a software solution to help researchers conduct respondent-driven sampling, a survey technique to collect data on hard-to-reach populations. 

“I feel honored to get this award and am excited that students will be able to share in the continuing research that the award will provide,” stated Matta. “This project is a continuation of my current research interests, which involve using computer science to study social and medical problems.”
